HUPA/KARUK/YUROK NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BASKET CAP/HAT. This beautiful women’s basket Cap is woven with a half twist overlay in a Friendship basketry design using Alder Dyed Woodwardia Fern, Beargrass, and Root. This incredibly skilled weaver made very fine tight weaves throughout the basket. Originally sold to me as 7 1/8” it only measures this in a few areas and actually measures 6 3/4” in most areas and stands tall at 4 1/2” and more conical shape which leads me to believe this cap is quite older.
There are areas of common beargrass breakage on the design and an area of minor rim damage that has been previously repaired and shown in the picture with the Stanley tape measure. The colors on the cap are vibrant against all the beargrass.
